Transformers BotBots Hawt Diggity review

Back in Transformers BotBots Series 1, each set of figures included a checklist showing the mall where they lived. The Greaser Gang had a restaurant on the second floor and a kiosk on the ground floor; Hawt Diggity is downstairs, playing next to the other hot dog BotBot, S'up Dog.

In the 1970s, young black girls playing jumprope began inserting -iz- sounds into words and names, in order to pad out the syllable count when it was needed to make the rhythm work. This linguistic quirk first made it into pop culture in the 1981 song "Double Dutch Bus," but really took off when Snoop Dogg began using it, in the form "-izzle," to replace nearly any word he felt like. It became a mainstay in rap and hip hop cuture, and by the late '90s had even been appended to the end of the humble Glock pistol to form... Glizzy. For whatever reason, the Washington DC area began using the same term to refer to a hot dog, and eventually it somehow broke containment to become a standard part of Gen Z slang. But that wasn't until around 2020, two years after this figure came out, or else Hawt Diggity probably would have referenced it in her name. Leave a comment with your "Gliz"-inspired rename.

Hot Diggity was one of the first BotBots designed, and though her transformation scheme changed between the concept art and final product, it's still simple: unfold half the paper tray the hot dog is resting in and turn the pieces to wrap around the back of the head; unfold the other half of the tray to be the arms; and split the tip of the hot dog to be feet.

Hawt Diggity lives for the chance to be the star of the show. She can wow any crowd - she set the records for longest standing ovation and most likes - and never misses a chance to pose for a pic with her adoring fans.

Hawt Diggity is a nice-lookin robot. Her body is the orangey-pink color of the hot dog, with a little bit of the bun peeking around the sides of her waist. These days they'd never have painted that, but in 2018 it was still done. The head is very large on the body, but the big flat feet keep her steady. The arms are on balljoints, so they're quite poseable, though the paper tray kibble sticking up off them is a bit clunky. The face is pale gray, with a bit of a smile, and her goggles are the same yellow as the thick mustard that's lined onto the hot dog.

Hawt Diggity was available in a Greaser Gang 5-pack and a Jock Squad 8-pack, but then also unexpectedly made a return appearance in one of the Series 3 Arcade Renegade Surprise 16-packs.

  1. the official art image is a mistake, it depicts S'Up Dawg, not Hawt Diggity.

Now that's interesting, because we took it directly from Hasbro's site - that's why the little drawing down in the corner is a hot dog and not a corndog. It also means they had the wrong one loaded at one point; I wonder how long it was like that before they fixed it?

Oh and look, they had S'up Dog's image switched, too!

But more than that, it means I was wrong when I said Hawt Diggity appeared on the checklist twice, because I was just going by that piece of art...
