Colossus

X-Men Legends
by yo go re

Ra-Ra-Rasputin, married barely legal teen/
It was a shame how he carried on.

In the Age of Apocalypse timeline, the energy-warping Mikhail Rasputin was captured by the villain and brainwashed to become one of his Horsemen. He returned to Russia and slew all his homeland's heroes, sparing only his brother Piotr; that's when Colossus decided to join Magneto's X-Men. He served for years, but during one battle against Sentinels in Wakanda, Piotr decided he could fight no longer, and just sat down and stopped. Respecting his decision, but not wanting to leave Peter alone in the world, Magneto asked him to stay and help teach and protect the next generation of mutants. ...mmmmmmmmmmaybe not the best idea to put the emotionally damaged Ruaain in charge of the well-being of a bunch of vulnerable teens?

Colossus is the Build-A-Figure for the ninth series of X-Men Marvel Legends, and the second series of "Age of Apocalypse" Marvel Legends. That's not going to be confusing or anything. Anyway, buy six of the seven figures in this series (Magneto doesn't come with any pieces) and you can assemble the big guy.

You might expect AoA Colossus to use some of the parts from the recent Colossus figure, but he does not - every bit of him is new. While Peter's usual organic steel form looks like flat plates running horizontally around his body, his alternate reality counterpart has muscles that are more like thick, segmented cords that try to resemble normal (exaggerated) human anatomy. Allegedly he was so injured at one point only Magneto's powers could keep him alive - maybe this change in style is a result of that? He wears new bracers, with elbow pads, and thick boots with kneepads. He's got little red trunks held up by giant yellow suspenders, and a single studded red shoulder pad that's strapped across his chest.

According to Wikipedia and every site that uncritically copies its info from there, Colossus wears a Dread Pirate Roberts mask because his face was scarred by acid. The comics never seem to have said any such thing, so we're left to assume it's just for fashion reasons. Although he starred in Generation Next, the book drawn by Chris Bachalo, the gritted teeth on this one really scream "Roger 'I was hired because I could draw kind of like Joe Maduriera but didn't cost as much' Cruz," who did the art in the story's big finale in X-Men: Omega.

Alternate Colossus has a balljointed head, hinged neck, swivel/hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, a hinged torso, swivel waist, balljointed hips, swivel thighs at the edge of his shorts, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge feet. Additionally, the ties to his mask are a little balljoint, so you can turn them around and pose them however you like. That's pretty neat, especially considering their wildly crooked sculpt. The figure comes with your choice of open hands or closed fists, so you can decide how violent you want him to be.

AoA Colossus was not a healthy individual. When he found out he had the chance to save his sister Illyana, he chose to abandon his students in Sugar Man's prison in order to ensure her rescue. Then, when he found out she would be dead in the corrected timeline, he went berserk and charged at the device that would allow them to accomplish it; intending to bring him back to his senses, Shadowcat stepped in his way, knowing that he'd stop and so she didn't need to phase. ...he didn't stop. The 600-pound metal man ran straight over his flesh and blood wife, immediately crushing her. He only paused after he realized what he'd done, giving Gambit the chance to kill him. Poor guy. The Age of Apocalypse really messed Colossus up, mentally, but this is a very nice toy of him. And it's also fun how close this series of figures lines up with the potential lineup we imagined last year, while still leaving enough behind for a third series in the future.

Rogue | Cyclops | Sabretooth | Shadowcat | Iceman | Legion
