Raphael

Fortnite TMNT
by yo go re

Okay, one last time...

Always ready for a fight and a master with sai.

The TMNT Set first appeared in Fortnite's Item Shop in December of 2023, and has come back about a dozen times since then. As of this writing, however, it's been 299 days since they were available for sale. (There's a fun math puzzle for you: figure out specifically when this review was written based on only that context clue. It's currently 1:05 pm. Have at it.) Despite the fact all four skins are sold separately (as opposed to one skin with four styles), it's not like any of them ever show up alone: it's not like you'll ever see Leonardo without Michelangelo, or Raphael by himself.

Not since Donatello and his headphones has one of the brothers had such a unique head. No, Leo and Mikey didn't literally have the same sculpt, but the head is the same basic shape and minor changes in the mask don't really make a difference, but Raph doesn't just wear a strip of cloth over his eyes, he wears one that covers his entire scalp! At last, some variety!

All the Fortnite Turtles stand about 6¾" tall, because every Fortnite character needs to be the same height. NECA's milking its horror licenses for this as well, so Michael Myers and Billy the Puppet are also going to be this size, that'll be fun. It doesn't make Raphael look much like a "teenage" mutant ninja turtle, to be honest, but theoretically they'll all become grown-ass adults at some point, so I guess this is Raphael from the future. Wow, time travel! This game is layered! Looking at the digital model, he should have some scratches scarring the front of his shell, but that wouldn't work with a reused mold.

All the Turtles have minor variations in what clothing they wear - you know, everybody has kneepads, everybody has elbow pads, everybody has a belt, but the specifics get different. Like, Raph wears the same style of belt as Mikey, but he gets pouches on both sides, not just one; all four brothers have cloth wraps on their forearms, but only here do they go all the way down past his knuckles like a Muay Thai boxer; Raphael's the only one who doesn't wear anything at all below his knees, opting to be barefoot, but he's also the only one to have armored pauldrons on his shoulders, with the style matching his kneepads. It really is cool to put all four of them next to each other and examine the small differences.

We've listed all the articulation in the other reviews, but this whole time there's secretly been one more joint we haven't told you about. Raphael is the first Turt to not have any sort of strap running over his chest - there's one horizontally across the middle of his shell, but only on the back, not continuing around the sides. And so, without anything holding it in place, we can finally find out that the rear shell is not glued into the toy's back, but rather is mounted on a barbell joint, allowing you to shift it around... as long as there isn't a strap glued into it and into the chest, that is. It's an unexpected choice, and honestly doesn't add much value (fully zero on the other three toys), but if you wanted to turn the shell upside down for some reason, you totally can.

The figure includes his weapons, and his themed backpack. "Raph's Sai Holster" is, as the name implies, a holster for Raph's sais. It's basically just a pocket with two loops flanking it, but since it plugs in directly on that band that runs across the shell, it looks really nice in place. The ties on the weapons' handles only look right when they're in the backpack - otherwise they stick up in the air instead of hanging down. It's not too noticeable when they're in his hands, but it's still an issue.

When you buy the figure, you get a code to redeem for an in-game emote, "Ninja Stance: Raph," which can be performed by any character. If you already have the emote and try to redeem the code, you get nothing. Really, Epic? You couldn't refund the cost to anyone who'd bought it before? Even NECA understands not ripping off your customers, because despite Target trying to charge $37.99 for these figures, NECA says they're only supposed to be $29.99, which isn't a terrible price for what you get.

Donatello | Michelangelo | Leonardo | Raphael
