"It's more than a little annoying that we got a concept art figure before we got more of the Deadpool Corps, but whatever. Infinite multiverse, infinite possibilities. Maybe this is from a universe where the 90s never ended?"

The Cavillrine

Deadpool & Wolverine
by yo go re

You know, from behind, he kind of looks like...

Making his MCU debut, an unexpected face made a surprise cameo as a Wolverine variant with little patience for Deadpool's antics.

Yes he did, and even the script did its part to keep it a surprise: on the page, he was "Hopper-rene," referencing Stranger Things' David Harbour, because director Shawn Levy had also worked on that show. That was never a real intention, since Harbour already had an MCU role, it was just a safeguard in case the script leaked. Getting Henry Cavill to be the next Logan is a popular bit of fan-casting, like getting Jim from The Office to be Reed Richards. Unlike Office Jim, the idea of Cavillrine was based on more than "he had a beard one time"; and so also unlike Office Jim, Cavillrine wasn't stupid on the face of it, nor was it predictably disappointing when it did happen.

While all the other Wolverines we saw in the film were wearing new costumes, this one wasn't - in fact, there was even an action figure of this look already! Back in 2003, the second series of ToyBiz's X-Men 2 line featured Street Fight Logan, showing him in his casual "grab the kids and escape Stryker's assault on the mansion" look of jeans and a tank top, and now here we are, more than two decades later, getting basically the same thing. This one doesn't have his shirt tucked into his pants, and the boots he's wearing are more "work" than "cowboy," but it's undeniably a parallel.

The figure includes two heads, but there's really no reason for it: they look functionally identical. It's a great likeness of Henry Cavill on both of them, better than any we've gotten on any other toys, but the expression barely changes between them. In point of fact, the one that's beside him in the tray when you open the box is supposed to be angrier than the one he's got on, but it's not angry angry, it just has the eyebrows done at a minorly different angle, and is not worth the effort.

The figure's paint is slightly more involved than you might expect. When Wade found this Logan, he was working on his motorcycle (and just a sidenote, wouldn't 5'3" comicbook Wolverine have trouble riding one? Would his little feet even be able to reach anything?), so there's a little bit of grease painted on his legs and the lower edge of his shirt. It's not much, but it's better than plain blue and white would have been.

The sculpt is new, because the only other character to wear jeans was Laura and that would have been one weird repaint. He still has the normal articulation for this line, including the "ringed balljoint" shoulders and, surprisingly, shin swivels! Okay, they're not in the shin, they're just above the ankle, inside the cuffs of the pantleg, but you know what we mean. You can turn his feet, something that is annoyingly rare these days.

The figure includes both plain fists, and fists with his claws out. One of the fun parts of getting Henry Cavill to play Wolverine was that when he popped his claws, he didn't just slide them out of his hands like normal, he moved his arms to do it - much like the way August Walker famously "reloaded" his arms before throwing a punch in Mission Impossible. Fun!

Cavillrine is part of the same series as Wolverinepool and "X-Force" Deadpool, and so is the only one who actually appeared in the movie. There are still a lot of other Wolverine variants available to be made, so hopefully The Cavillrine won't be the last one we get to add to our collections. And hopefully any others are as good as this.
